August up to the end of November, but were so worried by flie that they put
on no condition. Girth measurements of the majority in the autumn were the
same or less than they had been in the spring.
Cattle as regards condition did not suffer so much from flies.
One donkey mare and one donkey filly were sold to Java.
Sheep—Suffered more from the abnormal rains than any other stock,
chiefly owing to maggot infection.
Parasitic castritis gave some trouble in the autumn. As usual the worms
found were chiefly " Hæmonchus contortus. Drenching the flocks with copper
sulphate and mustard kept the disease in check." In previous years casualties
among lambs born in the cold weather have been very heavy. To avoid this the
rams were taken out of the flocks at the end of the cold weather, and put back
in October. The experiment looks like being very successful ; the ewes began
to lamb in March and up to the end of the year 156 lambs had been born with
no casualties.
No trouble was experienced in washing and shearing the heavily pregnant
ewes in March.
94 ram lambs and 17 ewe lambs were sold for breeding during the year—
considerably more than in any previous year.
Rupees 3,123 was realised for wool during the year. The Cawnpore
Woollen Mills, Limited, writing of the spring clip wrote " We are particularly
pleased with the ½ and 3/4 bred wool, the handle of which before scouring was
not unlike that of Merino......we would say that this consignment was much
better got up than previous lots we have received from experimental stations
in India. "
8. Cultivation.— During the year the following quantities of grain and
fodder were received from the five cultivation blocks :—
