cattle imported from the Punjab viâ Khairabad and camels
of Powindahs coming from Afghanistan during cold months
were examined with a view to detect rinderpest in the
former and surra in the latter.

Work of the recently introduced subsidy cattle breed-
ing scheme was seriously looked after in Peshawar and
Hazara Districts, and the Superintendent checked the work
done by the staff while on tour, that is, inoculation, castra-
tion and general treatment of diseases.

Three Arab horse stallions were bought during the
year at Bombay and three donkey stallions were purchased
from the Government Cattle Farm, Hissar. The Dhanni
tract in the Punjab was visited for selection of suitable
stud bulls, and the Jehangir-Abad Cattle Farm for selection
of Montgomery bulls.

Judging and classification at three important horse
shows and cattle fairs in the Province viz. Bannu, Haripur
and Dera Ismail Khan, were conducted and the temporary
dispensaries set up at the fairs were inspected by the
Superintendent. Live-stock in many out lying villages and
in the numerous weekly cattle fairs held in the Province
were inspected on the spot, investigation into the prevalence
of cattle diseases were carried out and inoculation checked.
Several unreported cases were discovered and immediate
action was taken. The Superintendent also toured in
Waziristan.

During the year under report Veterinary Inspector
M. Ghulam Qadir held charge of the Peshawar, and
Veterinary Inspector S. Ali Akbar Shah of the Derajat,
Sub-Division.

4. Mortality—table II—

During the year under report there were 38,818 cases
and 3,045 deaths against 17,349 cases and 4,557 deaths in
the previous year.

The decrease in mortality is in no small measure due
to the activity and promptness displayed both by the
supervising and subordinate staff in connection with the
control of the various diseases. The year under report
