54.   Six new stallion stands have been opened in the following 4
districts :—Allahabad, Jhansi, Hamirpur and Sultanpur.

55.   The question of supply of more stallions to Mainpuri and
Bareilly district boards and a new one to Kheri district is under corres-
pondence, and it is expected that in the near future a supply will be
made.

56.   The new system of issuing covering and foaling certificates is
getting more popular year by year, and it is hoped that it will, to some
extent, revive the interest of the people in horse-breeding operations.

57.   As for the progeny of the provincial stallions, it is gratifying
to note that continual improvements have been marked in the blood of
these animals. On the occasion of the horse show at the Saharanpur
exhibition a part of the prize money was awarded to the progeny of
thoroughbred English stallions in a show particularly held for them which
gave an impetus to the improvement of horse-breeding industry in the
district.

58. At the commencement of the year there were 13 donkey stal-
lions on the roll. Eight were newly purchased and 5 destroyed, being
unserviceable for stud work, thus making a balance of 10 at the close of
the year. Ten donkeys were at stud, and the number of mares covered
by them was 358 as against 387 of the last year. The decrease is due
to the fact that the new jacks were received late in the year in January,
1928. A new donkey stallion stand has been opened in the district of
Basti.

portant fairs and shows whenever they were free from other urgent
nature of work, and at several instances they were vested with the res-
ponsibility of judging cattle and horses for distribution of prizes to the
owners. One of the special features of the fairs and shows this year
was the Hardwar-Kumbh Fair which, although not a cattle or horse
fair, necessitated the opening of two temporary Veterinary dispensaries
for the treatment of the large number of conveyance animals that were
brought in for the vast multitude of people who attended the fair. The
work in the fair has been commended by the officer in charge, and is an
encouragement to the staff on duty. At the Etawah district exhibition,
shoeing competition was organized for the first time with hopeful
results. At the Dewa Fair (Bara Banki) there was a new item by
the exhibition of a Government stallion which was greatly appreciated
by the public. Veterinary exhibits were as usual displayed, and
propaganda work by demonstrations and lectures and distribution of
