        Annual Administration Report of the Civil Veterinary
          Department, Ajmer=Merwara (British Rajputana),
                              for the official year 1915=16.

General Administration.

Mr. J. G. Cattell held charge of the office of the Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Sind, Baluchis-
tan and Rajputana, from 1st April
1915 to 12th March 1916. He had to take leave on account of ill-health from
13th March 1916 when Khan Sahib S. G. Haji, Deputy Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Sind, acted for him. Owing to his time being fully
taken up in Sind and Baluchistan Mr. Cattell was unable to tour in Rajputana
during the year.

                              I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION.

                                Veterinary Colleges and Schools.

2. There are no veterinary colleges or schools in the province and there is
therefore nothing to record under the heading.

                                  II.—TRETMENT OF DISEASES.

3. Outbreaks of contagious disease were reported from both Ajmer and
Merwara districts. The diseases reported
were rabies in equines, hæmorrhagic septi-
cæmia, black quarter and anthrax in
bovines and anthrax, sheep pox, rabies, distemper and mange in other animals.
The total mortality reported amongst all classes of animals was 836 against
194 reported last year. Very little reliance, however, can be placed on the
mortality statistics.

                                      Equine contagious disease.

4. One horse was reported to have died of rabies in the Ajmer district.

                                      Bovine contagious disease.

5. Fifty-four head of cattle were reported to have died in Ajmer district
(5 from hæmorrhagic septicæmia, 18 from black quarter and 31 from anthrax)
against 167 deaths reported last year.

6. No inoculations were performed during the year under report against
1,076 inoculations performed against
rinderpest last year. This year outbreaks
were reported too late to allow of preventive inoculations being carried out or
owners were not willing to have their animals inoculated.

                            Contagious disease in other animals.

7. Two hundred deaths from anthrax, 562 from sheep pox and 1 from
distemper were reported from Ajmer district. Thirteen deaths from rabies
(5 from Ajmer and 8 from Merwara) and 5 from mange in Merwara district
were also reported during the year under report. Last year 21 deaths from
rabies, 5 from distemper and 1 from tetanus were reported from both districts.

8. While on tour Veterinary Assistants treated 351 animals for contagious
diseases and 17 animals for non-contagious
ailments against a total of 365 animals
treated last year.
