Six hundred and three castrations (480 bovines, 1 equine and 122 other
animals) were performed at the dispensaries as against 973 (854 bovines, 6
equines and 113 others) animals castrated in 1938-39.

                          III. BREEDING OPERATIONS.

23.  Table VI-ABovines.—There were 3 bulls belonging to Government
and 4 to the District Board at the beginning of the year and there was the same
number at the end. The figures of 6 Government bulls and 7 District Board
bulls at end of 1938-39 given in para. 23 and Table VI-A of last year's Annual
Administration Report were incorrect.

24.  The cost of keep of the bulls during the year under report was
Rs. 453 from Provincial and Rs. 192 from Local Fund, the same as in previous
year. Some of the bulls were maintained by private individuals.

The figures of services of the bulls are not available.

25.  Table VI-B.—No buffalo bulls are kept for breeding purposes at the
expense of Government or the District Board.

26.  Table VI.C.—No equine breeding operations are carried out in Ajmer-
Merwara under official supervision.

                              IV. FAIRS AND SHOWS.

27.  Table VII and XII.—No horse or cattle show was held during the year
but the usual Pushkar fair was held and the numbers of animals present are
shown in Table VII.

                     V. SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

28.  Table X.—There were three posts of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons
of which one was vacant at the beginning of the year. This was filled and
there were 3 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons in charge of Veterinary Dispensaries
at the close of the year.

            VI. EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

29.  Table IX.—The expenditure of the department in 1939-40 was
Rs. 9,357 as against Rs. 9,594 in the previous year.

                           VII. GENERAL REMARKS.

30.  Attention is invited to para. 30 of the Annual Administration Report
for 1938-39 and it is again suggested that a full time Deputy Director may
be appointed to control the work of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons and to
deal with Veterinary and Animal Husbandry activities in British Rajputana.
