Below Annual Administration Report of the
Civil Veterinary Department, Sind, for the year
                                            I938-39.

                                                  No. 3787/G.-IV-3 OF 1939-40.

                                                OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF

                                                VETERINARY SERVICES, SIND,

Karachi, dated the 17th August 1939.

Forwarded, with compliments, to the Secretary to Government of
Sind, Revenue Department.

2.     Mortality Statistics.— The Statistics in table I show that the
reported mortality among cattle and other animals from contagious and
parasitic diseases, during the year ending 31st March 1939, was 11,138
as compared with 15495 in the previous year. There were fewer out-
breaks of Rinderpest and the mortality from Liver Fluke among cattle
and buffaloes was considerably less during the year under report than
in 1937-38.

3.     Dispensaries.—Two Itinerating Veterinary Dispensaries and
2 grant-in-aid Veterinary Dispensaries were opened and the District
Local Board, Thar Parkar, opened a dispensary at their entire cost
during the year under review. With these additions there were 24
Veterinary Dispensaries working in the Province at the end of the year.
The number of in and out patients treated at dispensaries rose from
28,348 in 1937-38 to 32,167 in 1038-39. The work done by the sub-
ordinate staff on tour, shown in table IV, shows a large increase, the
total number of animals treated and castrated during the year being
1,15,250 as against 54,872 in the previous year. The increase is due
partly to additional staff employed and partly to the treatment of an in-
creased number of cases of Liver Fluke. The allotment of travelling
allowance for the subordinate staff was inadequate and touring
consequently had to be curtailed A large part of the touring of the
subordinate staff depends on the incidence of disease, and this cannot
be foreseen with any accuracy.

4.    Horse Shows.—The Jacobabad Horse Show was held, as usual,
and the District Local Board were given the grant of Rs. 500 from Pro-
vincial Funds and a similar sum donated by the Karachi Race and Rid-
ing Club towards the Show.

5.     Equine Breeding Operations.__The number of stallions could

not be increased as most of the District Local Boards are not willing to
incur any expenditure in this connection. The five stallions at stud
covered 204 mares as against 207 in the previous year.
