Annual Administration Report of the Civil Veterinary
                    Department, Sind, for the year 1938-39.

                            GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.

Mr. J. H. G. Jerrom, M.R.C.V.S., I.V.S., held charge from 1st
April to 9th May 1938 and from 8th November 1938 to 31st March 1939.
During the intervening period, Mr. J. H. G. Jerrom, was on leave out
of India and the charge was held by Rao Bahadur V. R. Phadke, Bom-
bay Veterinary Service, Class I (Retired). Mr. Jerrom attended the
meeting of the Animal Husbandry Wing of the Imperial Council of
Agricultural Research at New Delhi in February 1939. He was on
tour for 68 days during which he visited each District and inspected
most of the Veterinary Dispensaries. Rao Bahadur V. R. Phadke was
on tour for 12 days in Sind and 7 days in Rajputana.

2.     Mr. C. S. G. Haji, Sind Veterinary Service, Class II, continued
to be in-charge of the Goat Virus Producing Station during the year
under report.

3.     Mr. H. S. Bawa, M.R.C.V.S., Sind Veterinary Service (Special
post) held the post of Veterinary Investigation Officer, Sind and Ajmer-
Merwara, throughout the year. He was on leave from 12th to 19th
September 1938 when no substitute was employed. Mr. Bawa was on
tour for 114 days and travelled 9,398 miles by rail and 1,134 miles
by road.

                            I.—Veterinary Instruction.

4.     Four scholars from Sind were studying at the Bombay Veteri-
nary College at the beginning of the year. One of these graduated and
was given a post in the Subordinate Veterinary Service. One failed in
class B but was again granted a scholarship and 3 new scholars were
sent. There were thus six scholars from Sind studying at the Bombay
Veterinary College on 31st March 1939.

                            II—Treatment of Diseases.

5.     Outbreaks of contagious diseases were reported from all the
districts, the total reported mortality during the year being 11,138 as
against 15,495 in the preceding year.

                            (i) EQUINE CONTAGIOUS DISEASE.

6.    Surra.—This disease was reported from Karachi, Hyderabad
and Thar Parkar districts. There were 121 horses attacked, of which
90 were successfully treated with Naganol. Two were destroyed and
29 died untreated.

7.     Other contagious diseases.—Thirty nine attacks and 12 deaths
were recorded, the diseases beings Piroplasmosis, Rabies and Strangles.
