85.     Mule-breeding.—Although this branch of operations is in its infancy
with us, still Lieutenant Hamilton, who attended the Jacobabad Horse Show this
year, picked up some good mules. This officer was deputed by the Commissary
General, Multan.

86.    Assistance rendered by the Superintendent to the Remount Depôt,
Ahmednagar.
—During the year under report there was an outbreak of glanders in
the Remount Depôt; so it was necessary for me to remain here and make a
bi-weekly inspection and take other precautions to try and prevent the disease
from spreading, and I am glad in this we were successful, as only one case
had to be destroyed. At the same time I would strongly recommend that a
Veterinary Surgeon should be appointed to the Depôt as I am away for at least
eight months in the year and when the remounts arrive from Bombay, there is
no veterinary supervision.

87.     With regard to the remarks in paragraph 14 of Government Resolu-
tion No. 7961 in the Revenue Department, dated 8th November 1890, I beg to
submit that so long as the scarcity of forage continues, the result of horse-breed-
ing operations incommensurate with the expenditure incurred, will not be satis-
factory.

88.    This year also scarcity of forage continued in the districts of Dhárwár.
Sátára, Khándesh, Sholápur, Ahmednagar, Ahmedabad and Kaira. My remarks
on this point are the same as those given in paragraph 71 of the last Annual
Administration Report.

89.    The explanation required by paragraph 4 of the review on the last
Administration Report is given in the remark column of Appendix VII.

90.     The valuable assistance rendered to the Department by the following
officers during the year under report is worthy of high commendation :—

Mr. Steele, Deputy Commissioner, Jacobabad; Colonel Hogg, Com-
mandant, 6th Bombay Cavalry; Mr. Mackay, District Superintendent of
Police, Káthiáwár ; Mr. Lester, District Superintendent of Police, Ahmeda-
bad; Major Yates, Political Agent, Thal Chotiali, and Major Gaisford,
Political Agent, Quetta and Peshin; Captain Grantham, 6th Bombay
Cavalry, Jacobabad.
