                              III.Horse Fairs and Shows.

36. Table XV. is an abstract showing the number of stock exhibited, the
number of remounts purchased, and the number of prizes awarded at several
Horse Shows held in 1893-94.

Poona.

37.  Commenced on the 27th September 1893. The total number of
animals exhibited amounted to 320 or 65 more than
the number (255) shown in 1891.

38.  Both in point of numbers and quality of animals exhibited the Show
compared very favourably with former ones held in Poona.

39.  Classes.—Brood mares, yearling colts, two and three-year old fillies
showed considerable improvement over the animals exhibited at former Shows.

40.  Mule-breeding.—The class of mares for mule-breeding was poor, but it
must be remembered that the industry is still in its infancy in the Deccan and
will probably take years to become popular.

41.  The total number of animals (84) that changed hands is satisfactory.
The Remount Officer purchased 13 head of young stock for the rearing depôt
but complained of the high prices he was compelled to pay, due, in my opinion,
to competition from racing men chiefly for the get of one particular stallion.

42.  It has been decided that the Deccan Horse Show shall be held at
Ahmednagar for two years in succession and not alternately at Poona and
Ahmednagar as originally proposed.

Quetta.

43.  Commenced on the 3rd of October 1893. Total number of animals
amounted to 859 or 233 more than the number (626)
shown last year. These figures do not include cattle or
sheep.

44.  There is a satisfactory increase in the number of animals and a marked
improvement in their condition and the care taken of them by their owners.

45.  Classes.—Brood mares and young stock classes very good. The two-
year old fillies consideraby better than the three-year old.

46.   Geldings.—Three-year olds bad, but the two-year olds well grown and
well developed.

47.  Mares and Mule-breeding.—A commencement has been made this year
and a donkey stallion from Jacobabad was sent towards the end of the season,
who covered 19 mares, More donkey stallions will be sent this year.
