SIR,

I have the honour to submit the annual report of the Glanders and Farcy
Department in Bombay for the official year 1901-1902.

2.    During the year under report 20 horses were admitted to the Lazaretto,
as against 20 and 4 horses in 1900-1901 and 1899-1900, respectively.

All these horses came from the City. Out of this number, 3 were con-
firmed glandered cases, 15 were suspicious, and 2 were contacts. Of the 15
suspicious cases, 3 reacted to the mallein test and were destroyed, thus bring-
ing up the total number of glandered cases for the year to 6 as against 3 in
1900-1901 and none in 1899-1900. Ten were discharged as they did not react
to mallein test, 1 died, but the post-mortem examination revealed no signs of
glanders, and 1 remained under observation. Of the 2 contacts, 1 died from
pneumonia and 1 was discharged.

Out of the total admissions, 4 belonged to private individuals, 2 to an Arab
horse dealer, 13 to owners of carriages plying for hire and 1 was ownerless.

Of the horses admitted 4 were walers, 1 country-bred and 15 arabs.

Bombay, vide Appendix No. 1, as against 4,825 and 4,112 in 1900-1901 and
1899-1900, respectively.

The Australian imports were 1,396 horses, 298 ponies as against 1,738
horses and 119 ponies and 1,545 horses and 132 ponies in 1900-1901 and
1899-1900, respectively.

The Arab imports stand at 1,802 horses and 927 ponies as against 1,561
horses and 862 ponies and 1,333 horses and 822 ponies in 1900-1901 and
1899-1900 respectively.

The Persian imports were 206 horses and 11 ponies as against 144 horses
and 10 ponies and 146 horses in 1900-1901 and 1899-1900, respectively.

The Austro-Hungarian imports were 31 horses and 4 ponies as against 98
horses and 1 pony and 13 horses in 1900-1901 and 1899-1900, respectively.

267 mules were imported. Eleven came from Australia and 256 from the
Persian Gulf. Out of the Australian imports, the percentage of casualties en
route
from various causes was 2.405. The casualties amongst the Arabs stood
at 401 per cent.
