ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE CIVIL VETERINARY
    DEPARTMENT IN THE BOMBAY PRESIDENCY FOR THE
    YEAR 1907-08.

Mr. K. Hewlett held charge as Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Depart-
ment, Bombay Presidency, throughout the year under report.

2.    The Superintendent was away from head-quarters for 2l7 days during
the year as against 175 days last year. He travelled 14,816 miles by rail,
1,036 miles by road, and 383 miles by sea as against 19,831 miles by rail,
860 miles by road, and 45 miles by sea last year. In addition to the above, the
Superintendent in his capacity of Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department,
Sind, Baluchistan and Rájputána travelled 932 miles by rail, and 18 mile3 by
road.

3.    Tours were made in connection with cattle breeding, horse breeding
and contagious diseases of animals in various parts of the Presidency. The
following State studs were visited:—Bhávnagar, Pálitána, Junágad, Manvadar,
Rájkot, and Vánkáner, and the following State herds of Khillari cattle:—Aundh,
Jath, Miraj and Sángli. All the stallion stands were visited and all the Veteri-
nary dispensaries inspected. The Superintendent attended the cattle fairs at
Mhasvad, Jath, Sholápur, Mhasa, Chinchli and Chikruvati, and acted as one of
the judges at the shows at Mhasvad and Sholápur The cattle survey of the
Kánara Disrict was carried out during the year and a tour was made in the Man
valley in connection with selecting a suitable site for a cattle breeding farm for
Khillari animals; a short tour also was made in Rádhanpur to purchase bulls
for the Chharodi Farm and for the Inspector-General, Civil Veterinary Depart-
ment. The Superintendent visited personally six outbreaks of contagious dis-
ease. The Northcote Cattle Farm at Chharodi was inspected 7 times. The
Pinjrapoles at Surat, Ráita, Rádhanpur, Pandharpur were visited.

4.    The Superintendent attended as a Member of the Board of Examiners
at the Bombay Veterinary College in December and conducted the supple-
mentary examination there in March. He attended the Veterinary Conference
held in Calcutta in February. Mr. Hewlett acted as Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Sind, Baluchistan and Rájputána, in addition to his own
duties upto November 25th on which date he was relieved of his extra duties by
Major Trydell.

5.    Mr. F. Ware, I.C.V.D., was placed under the Superintendent to receive
training in the duties of a Superintendent. He reported himself on 25th Nov-
ember. He accompanied the Superintendent while on tour but was transferred
for duty to the Bombay Veterinary College on December 17th. He, however,
rejoined the Superintendent on March 24th for a further period of training.
He travelled 891 miles by rail and 3 miles by road.

I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION—VETERINARY COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS.

6.    There is no information to be recorded under this heading as the sub-
ject is dealt with in the Annual Report of the Bombay Veterinary College.

II.—TREATMENT OF DISEASE—CONTAGIOUS DISEASES, OUTBREAKS,
                MORTALITY, PREVENTIVE INOCULATION, &C.

7.    During the year under report, outbreaks of contagious disease occurred
in all the districts of the Presidency as well as in the City of Bombay. The
numbers of equines reported to have died from contagious disease during the
year amount to 135 and the numbers of bovines amount to 22,084 as compared to
210 equines and 26,947 bovines last year.
