type for sale to the cattle-breeders of Gujarát and thus supply a want which is
now becoming acute. Management of the farm has been carried out in accord-
ance with the proposals made by the Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Depart-
ment, in his letter No. 385, dated 19th April 1906, to the address of the Director
of Agriculture, Bombay. The land cultivated and crops grown have been in
accordance with the suggestions of Mr. Mollison, Inspector-General of Agricul-
ture. At the commencement of the year under report the herd consisted of
3 stock bulls, 110 cows, 88 heifers, 17 heifer calves, 3 yearling bulls, 22 bull
calves, 12 castrated stock and at the close of the year it consisted of 5 stock
bulls, 140 cows, 82 heifers, 24 heifer calves, 13 two year old bulls, 17 yearling
bulls, 16 bull calves, 12 castrated stock. During the year under report two
stock bulls were purchased for use on the farm and 6 heifers, 20 young castrated
male stock were sold. There are 13 young bulls which will be ready for issue
in the cold weather of 1908 and it is hoped that this number will be turned
out annually. The fodder crops grown on the farm this year failed owing to
the rains being unfavourable. The hay crop amounted to 836,000 lbs. Build-
ings are urgently needed for the farm, but when those now sanctioned are
completed the estate will be satisfactorily provided in this respect as a cattle-
breeding farm. The Manager Mr. P. V. Nagarshet has worked well throughout
the year and has shown himself to be reliable and careful. The Superin-
tendent considers that he deserves credit for the way in which he has carried
out his duties.

                            (1) Horse and Pony Stallions.

44. On the 1st April 1907 there were 18 stallions under the control of
the Civil Veterinary Department in the Presidency. During the year under
report the following stallions were purchased:—"Bendigo," nutmeg grey Kathi
entire, 14—½ hands, 4 years, purchased for Rs. 600 and "Huzur" Dun Kathi,
14—2½, purchased for Rs. 600. At the close of the year there were 20 stallions
at the several stands as shown below:—

45. Table XI shows that the number of stallions actually employed at
stud work during the year was 16.24 as against 16.46 in the previous year, and
the number of mares covered by them has been 562, or an average of 34.60 per
stallion, as against 629, or an average of 38.21, in the previous year. This shows
a decrease of 67 in the total number of coverings, or an average of 4 mares
covered less per stallion. The decrease is chiefly noticeable in Gujarat where
some of the stallions were not allowed to cover more than 50 mares each during
the year, while the number of coverings effected by the stallions at Kaira,
Nadiad, and Pálanpur has greatly diminished. Some of the Deccan stands too,
especially Sholápur, Násik, Chalisgaon, and Jalgaon, have done very badly in
the number of coverings, probably due to less favourable season.
