(b) Mr. Y. N. Marathe held charge as Inspector of the Southern
Division with head-quarters at Belgaum. He was away from head-quarters
for 160 days, travelled 9,173 miles by rail, 1,066 by road and 753 by sea.
He inspected all the dispensaries in his division once in every three
months; special attention was paid to Chikodi, Sirsi and Panvel dispen-
saries. He attended the cattle markets at Belgaum, Bail-Hongal, Bijápur
and Dhárwár, visited the Hubli Pinjrapole, the Gadag Agricultural Farm
and Mounted Police Lines at Dhárwár. He attended the cattle fairs at
Devargudda, Jath, Hosritti and Chinchli, delivered lectures and distributed
leaflets on several diseases of cattle. He attended and organised the cattle
shows at Panvel and Belgaum and acted as one of the judges. He also
attended two outbreaks of rinderpest at Vaghawade, Belgaum District, and
one of Foot and Mouth disease at Pala in Kárwár District. He was
deputed to Allahabad to attend the exhibition. Mr. Marathe was only
promoted to Inspector in July last. During the time he has held the
appointment he has worked hard to acquaint himself with his division
and its requirements. Mr. Marathe is keen and energetic and will, I hope, with
more experience continue to develop and increase the efficiency of the
Department in his division.

(c) Mr. J. K. Bhatt held charge as Inspector of the Northern
Division with head-quarters at Ahmedabad throughout the year under
report. He was on tour for 214 days against 173 last year, travelled
16,101 miles by rail, 1,351½ by road against 8,519 and 654 by rail and road
respectively last year. He inspected all the dispensaries and Government
stallions in his division once every two months, and in cases where Junior
Graduates were in charge at more frequent intervals. He also inspected
the Local Board bulls in the Ahmedabad and Kaira Districts several times,
visited 11 slaughter-houses, 9 meat markets, and 20 Pinjrapoles, and cattle
markets at Dohad, Ahmedabad and Surat. He attended and organised
the cattle show at Viramgám, and horse and cattle show at Ahmedabad,
exhibited 283 articles consisting chiefly of animal food of Gujarat, varieties
of fodder, horse and cattle shoes in health and disease, horse and carriage
requisites, and a Medical chest. He also attended 32 outbreaks of contagious
diseases against 2 last year, performed 851 inoculations against rinderpest,
inspected 31 Surra cases in the Dak lines and many in the Thána District.
He selected sites for Veterinary dispensaries at Bulsár, Dohad, Anand,
Viramgám, Bárdoli and Dholka. He attended the Allahabad Exhibition.
Mr. Bhatt is a keen and energetic officer, and has worked his division well.
He has been specially active in connection with contagious diseases of Surra
and Rinderpest, but every endeavour must be made to push inoculation
work in connection with the latter disease. Mr. Bhatt delivered some
excellent lectures at various shows and made a most interesting exhibition
in the Veterinary Department of the Ahmedabad show.

67.    During the year under report 6 Veterinary Assistants were deputed
to undergo a course of training in anti-rinderpest inoculation at the Laboratory
at Bareilly. They all successfully passed the prescribed test at the end of the
course and were certified to be eligible to inoculate by the " Serum alone "
method.

68.    My thanks are due to my Head Clerk, Mr. Vishnu Yeshvant
Sohoni, who has worked hard and given me every assistance since I took
charge of the Department. Mr. Sohoni is an able clerk, and a thoroughly
trustworthy and reliable man. Mr. R. H. Dange and Mr. Godbole, my
2nd and 3rd clerks, and all others of the office staff have worked hard and
satisfactorily.
