ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE CIVIL VETERI-
NARY DEPARTMENT IN THE BOMBAY PRESIDENCY FOR
THE YEAR 1912-13.

During the year under report Lieut.-Colonel H. M. Maxwell held charge as
Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, Bombay Presidency, except for
63 days on privilege leave from 10th August to 11th October 1912.

2.    He was away from head-quarters for 94 days. He travelled 11,444
miles by rail, 598 miles by road and 40 miles by sea. He inspected the
Veterinary dispensaries at Dhulia, Jalgaon, Sávda, Násik, Ahmednagar,
Shrigonda, Poona, Manchar, Sholápur, Bársi, Pandharpur, Sátára, Karád,
Belgaum, Chikodi, Dhárwár, Gadag, Bijápur, Bágalkot, Alibág, Kalyán,
Pálghar, Surat, Bulsár, Bárdoli, Broach, Ankleshvar, Anand, Nadiád, Godhra,
Ahmedabad, Viramgám and Dholka.

3.    He also inspected the stallion stands at Dhulia, Ahmednagar,
Shrigonda, Ráhuri, Bárámati, Sirúr, Bársi, Karmála, Sángola, Ahmedabad,
Dholka, Prántij, Kaira, Nadiád, Godhra and Pálanpur. He attended the
cattle show at Sholápur and the Gujarat Horse Show at Ahmedabad. He
inspected the Government cattle farm at Chharodi 5 times. He acted as
President of the Board of Examiners at the Bombay Veterinary College in
November and December 1912 and conducted the supplementary examination
held there in March 1913. He visited Arab stables in Bombay several times
with a view to purchase stallions. In the beginning of the year under report,
a tour was made in the Gir Forest to visit the Famine cattle camps. He also
visited the cattle kitchens at Ahmedabad. He controlled the working of the
Glanders and Farcy in the Presidency outside the City of Bombay.

4.    Mr. J. D. Buxy held charge as Deputy Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, during the year under report, except for a period of
one month from 16th December 1912 to 15th January 1913 when he was
on privilege leave.

5.    He travelled 6,211 miles by rail, 948 miles by road and 466 miles by
sea. He inspected the Veterinary dispensaries at Bágalkot, Sirsi, Bail-Hongal,
Panvel, Ratnágiri, Mahád, Manchar, Shrigonda, Sangamner, Islámpur,
Shirpur, Poona, Nandurbár, Amalner, Yeola, Málegaon, Bárámati and Ankle-
shvar. He also inspected the Government stallion stands at Yeola and
Bárámati. He visited the Chharodi Cattle Farm once. Accompanied the
Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, in the Gir to visit the Famine
cattle camps, visited the cattle kitchens at Ahmedabad, attended an outbreak
of Anthrax in the Shrigonda Táluka of the Ahmednagar District. Supervised
the working of inoculations against rinderpest at the Military Dairy Farm,
Kirkee. He is directed to act as Personal Assistant to the Superintendent,
Civil Veterinary Department, and was responsible for all office work at head-
quarters.

6.    The appointment of Mr. J. D. Buxy as Veterinary Practitioner under
the Glanders and Farcy Act was sanctioned in Government Resolution,
Revenue Department, No. 8855, dated 25th September 1912, and he acted in
that capacity during the year under report.

7.    Mr. Buxy is the first Deputy Superintendent of the Civil Veterinary
Department appointed in the Presidency proper, and the very satisfactory way
in which he has carried out all his duties throughout the year fully justifies
his selection for the appointment.
