ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE
        CIVIL VETERINARY DEPARTMENT IN SIND
        FOR THE YEAR 1923-24.

                    GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.

Mr. J. H. G. Jerrom, I.V.S., held charge of the office of Superin-
tendent, Civil Veterinary Department, Sind and Rajputana,
throughout the year under report. He inspected all the veterinary
dispensaries and District Local Board stallions except the two
stallions in the Sukkur district ; and, when possible, attended out-
breaks of epidemic disease. He visited the local Pinjrapoles on
several occasions and inspected sites for the proposed lazaretto at
Karachi. He attended and judged the Jacobabad Horse and Pony
Show. He was on tour in Sind for 70 days and travelled 4,399 miles
by rail and 290 miles by road. In addition, he remained 10 days on
tour in Rajputana and travelled 2,046 miles by rail and 18 miles by
road.

2.    Khan Bahadur S. G. Haji held the post of Deputy Superin-
tendent, Civil Veterinary Department, Sind, up to the 29th February
1924 when he proceeded on six months' leave preparatory to
retirement. He inspected the veterinary dispensaries at Karachi,
Tatta, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad and
Kandkot; and attended outbreaks of epidemic disease when possible.
He was on tour for 46 days and travelled 2,708 miles by rail and 272
miles by road.

                I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION.

3.    There were seven stipendiary students at the Bombay
Veterinary College at the beginning of the year. Two passed the
final examination and were appointed to the Subordinate Civil
Veterinary Department, Sind. There were thus five scholars
studying at the College at the close of the year.

                II.—TREATMENT OF DISEASE.

4.    During the year, outbreaks of contagious disease were reported
from every district in the province. The
total number of deaths reported was 4,881

against 5,488 in the previous year.

                    Equine Contagious Disease.

5.    Glanders.—Six cases of Glanders were destroyed in Karachi
and 1 in Larkana, under the Glanders and Farcy Act, against 2
cases destroyed at Karachi and Hyderabad in the previous year.

6.    Surra.—Fifteen horses were attacked and all died or were
destroyed under the Glanders and Farcy Act, in the Karachi,
Hyderabad, Thar Parkar, Nawabshah, Larkana and Upper Sind
Frontier districts.

7.    Rabies.—One horse was attacked and destroyed in Karachi.
Four horses bitten by rabid dogs were treated at Karachi with Anti-
rabic Vaccine with apparently successful results.
