                         III—BREEDING OPERATIONS.

                                        (i) Equities.

25.    Tables VI and VII —There were six District Local Board
stallions at the beginning of the year. Two were handed over to
zamindars as the District Local Boards, owing to financial strin-
gency, were unable to maintain them. There were thus 4 stallions
at the close of the year. The stallions covered 175 mares during
the year as compared with 212 mares covered in the previous year.
The cost of maintenance of the stallions was Rs. 2,804 out of which
Government contributed Rs. 1,469.

                              (ii) Fairs and Shows.

26.    Horse and Pony Shows.—On account of financial stringency
the Jacobabad horse and pony show was not held this year.

              IV—SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

27.    There were 22 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons and two
Veterinary Inspectors at the beginning of the year. One Veteri-
nary Assistant Surgeon was deputed to Muktesar and his post was
kept vacant. There were thus 21 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons
and 2 Veterinary Inspectors at the close of the year. Of these 18
were in charge of Veterinary Dispensaries and 3 on reserve duty.
It has become very difficult to carry on the work of the Department
with the present inadequate staff and although the necessity of
opening more dispensaries and of appointing additional staff has
been recognized by Government, it is impossible to do so owing to
financial stringency.

28.    The Veterinary Inspector, Upper Sind Circle, was on tour
for 61 days and travelled 1,220 miles by rail and 244 miles by road.
He was deputed to attend outbreaks of rinderpest in Lower Sind.
The Veterinary Inspector, Lower Sind, was 102 days on tour and
travelled 1,578 miles by rail and 452 miles by road. He attended
several outbreaks of contagious disease. The touring of Veterinary
Inspectors had to be considerably curtailed owing to insufficient
budget allotment. Both the Veterinary Inspectors did creditable
work during the year.

29.    The clerical staff as usual carried out their duties satisfac-
torily.

           V—EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

30.    The expenditure of the department was Rs. 1,31,383 as
compared with 1,38,438 in the previous year.

                    VI—GENERAL REMARKS.

31.    The reporting of contagious disease, as remarked in the
previous reports, still leaves great room for improvement and
Tapedars have not yet realized the importance of prompt reporting
of disease among animals.
