Surra.—Fifty-two deaths from Surra were reported from Broach,
Kaira, Panch Mahals, Surat, Thana, East Khandesh, West
Khandesh, Kolaba and Bombay Suburban Districts and the City
of Bombay. The highest number of cases, viz., 19 being recorded
in the West Khandesh District. There were 124 cases of this
disease in the preceding year.

Epizootic Lymphangitis.—There were eight cases of epizootic
lymphangitis in the City of Bombay against four in the previous
year.

Strangles.—Twenty-two attacks of strangles were reported
from the Surat District and one from Thana District with no
mortality.

Other Contagious Diseases.—No case of other contagious disease
among equines was reported during the year.

                            Bovine Contagious Diseases.

23.    Rinderpest.—This disease continued to prevail with greater
severity than in the previous year in the Ahmednagar, Satara and
Sholapur Districts and also very seriously affected parts of Poona
District. Of the 1,596 outbreaks 280 were in the Ahmednagar
District, 204 in Satara, 188 in Poona, 173 in Kolaba and 131 in
Sholapur District. Other districts of East Khandesh, Nasik, Thana,
Kolaba, Ratnagiri, Belgaum and Bijapur were also seriously affected.
The disease was reported from almost every district in the Presi-
dency and the City of Bombay with the exception of Kaira and
Bombay Suburban Districts. Fifty-eight thousand two hundred
and twenty-five attacks and 29,170 deaths were reported as against
32,359 attacks and 14,081 deaths in the previous year. A special
staff of four Reserve Veterinary Assistant Surgeons was posted to
the Ahmednagar District and two to the Kolaba District to deal
with the disease. In the Ahmednagar District this was rendered
necessary by the closing of several dispensaries.

24.    Foot and Mouth Disease.—With the exception of Bombay
Suburban District, Foot and Mouth Disease appeared in all the
districts of the Presidency and the City of Bombay. Eighty-eight
thousand, four hundred and ninety-three head of cattle were
affected of which 317 died. During the previous year there were
67,970 attacks and 150 deaths. The disease was wide-spread in
Poona, Satara, Ahmednagar, Nasik, East Khandesh and Sholapur
Districts in the Central Division and Dharwar, Kanara, Kolaba
and Ratnagiri in the Southern Division. The total number of
outbreaks of the disease attended by the staff was 1,667.

25.    Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—Reports of Hæmorrhagic
Septicæmia outbreaks were received from all parts of the Bombay
Presidency excepting the Bombay City and Suburban District.
Five thousand six hundred and twenty animals were attacked by
this disease of which 4,780 succumbed. There were 4,302 attacks
and 3,623 deaths during the previous year. The disease was
microscopically confirmed in 73 outbreaks of the 489 attended.
