27. Full details of the working of this scheme has been
submitted to Government and the Imperial Council of Agricultural
Research. The expenditure during the year amounted to
Rs. 4,382-14-3.

                IV. DISEASES OF LIVE STOCK.

28. There was some reduction in the number of out-breaks
Table I. reported and attended this year, the numbers being 3,265
reported and 3,262 attended compared with 4,095

attended in 1938-39. With the exception of rinderpest and anthrax
there were fewer outbreaks of the more important diseases though
the greatest reduction is registered under Foot and Mouth disease.
In all, 63,975 head of stock were attacked and 20,420 died.

                Contagious Diseases of Equines.

29.Glanders.—No case of this disease was reported during the
year.

30.Surra.—Sixty-eight cases were reported of which 34 were
confirmed. Seventeen died and one was destroyed. Thirty-nine
cases (including incontacts suspected to be suffering from Surra)
were treated with Naganol of which 1 died.

31.Other Diseases.—Eighteen cases of Strangles were reported
from Ahmedabad District without mortality. Two deaths from
rabies in equines are recorded, one each in Broach and Sholapur
districts.

                  Contagious Diseases of Bovines.

32.Rinderpest.—With the exception of Sholapur district, out-
breaks were reported from all districts of the Province and from
Bombay City. In 253 outbreaks reported, 1,135 cattle and 1,417
baffaloes died, the greatest mortality being reported from Ratnagiri
(337), Bombay City (116), West Khandesh (364), Kolaba (315), East
Khandesh (230) and Kanara (163).

33.Foot and Mouth Disease.—This disease again appeared in all
districts. One thousand and sixty-five outbreaks were reported
and 1,062 attended, a reduction of 680 outbreaks attended compared
with the number attended during the previous year. In the course
of these outbreaks 30,109 cattle and 5,823 buffaloes were attacked
and 159 cattle and 70 buffaloes died. Nasik, West Khandesh,
East Khandesh, Bijapur and Kanara Districts were most severely
affected.

34.Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—Six hundred and thirty
outbreaks of this disease were reported from all districts except
Bombay Suburban. A mortality of 1,533 cattle and 2,828 buffaloes
was recorded. Belgaum, Dharwar, Satara, Nasik and Ahmednagar
were chiefly affected.
