Services of stallions.—Table
XI.

22. The total number of mares covered was 1,543 against 1,289 last year
or an average of 45.33 compared with 40.46. The
average in the Deccan was 45.80 and in Gujarát
44.32.

Feed and keep of stallions.—
Table XII.

23. The cost of feed and keep for the year is
shown in Table XII.

The increase in cost was due to scarcity in the Ahmednagar and Sholápur
Districts.

24. There is no mule breeding in the Presidency.

                  (4) FAIRS AND SHOWS.

Horse-fairs and shows.—
Table XIII.

26. The Horse Show at Ahmednagar was again not held owing to
famine. The one at Ahmedabad also fell through for
lack of funds.

Cattle fairs and shows.—

27. The annual show at Sholápur was abandoned on account of famine.

A cattle show was held at Sarkhej in the Ahmedabad
District. A sum of Rs. 510 was distributed in prizes
and two silver medals were awarded. It was not
attended by the Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, owing to inti-
mation of the date being received too late. The Deputy Superintendent attended
an Agricultural Show at Ranebennur (Dhárwár District). Grants of Rs. 100
each were given to the cattle sections of the Agricultural Shows held at Khed
(Poona District) and Mahád (Kolába District). All the shows were attended by
the Veterinary Inspectors and Veterinary Assistants of the respective districts.

N. B.—One Veterinary Assistant is seconded for employment at the Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals Dispensary at Násik.

The Inspectors were in charge of the Northern, Central and Southern
Divisions, respectively. Fifty Veterinary Assistants were employed at dispen-
saries, 1 as Manager of the Northcote Cattle Farm and the remainder as
reserves.

Increase of establishment.

29. A further increase of the establishment by one Veterinary Inspector
and 43 Veterinary Assistants has been sanctioned by
Government. This increase will have effect from the
1st April 1914 and will be spread over a period of five years. The pay of the
4th Grade has been raised from Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 and that of the 3rd Grade
from Rs. 45 to Rs. 50 per mensem.

Training in inoculation.

30. During the year 7 Veterinary Assistants were deputed to undergo a
course of training in inoculation work at the Imperial
Bacteriological Laboratory.

The work of the staff.

31. The Inspectors Ráo Sáheb J. K. Bhatt, R. N. Sane, and Y. N. Marathe
have toured energetically throughout the year and
Colonel Maxwell has recorded his appreciation of their
good work. They are in charge of very extensive areas and have very little
time for other than inspection work. A larger number of outbreaks of disease
should be attended as far as possible.
