ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE BOMBAY
VETERINARY COLLEGE FOR THE YEAR 1915-16.

Mr. K. Hewlett, the Principal of the College, held charge throughout the
year under report. The staff remained unchanged and continued on duty
throughout the year with the exception of Mr. Phadke who was absent on
furlough from 10th April to 2nd July while on military duty with horses on
board ship on the voyage to Marseilles.

2.                                The students.—There were 94 students' names on the College rolls
at the commencement of the year. Of these 4 students were eligible and
appeared for the Supplementary Examination, three passing successfully. Of
these three, one passed into Class B from Class A, one into Class C from Class
B and one graduated from Class C and consequently left the College. The
numbers were thus reduced to 93 and of these one student discontinued the
course and one was refused permission to appear for the examination on account
of not having attended the College regularly. In consequence 91 students
appeared for the Annual examination and 59 passed as against 54 who passed last
year out of the 75 who appeared. The percentage of passes this year was 64.83 as
against 72 last year and 69.73 in the preceding year. In the Final Year or
Class C, 29 students presented themselves and 15 passed giving a percentage
of 51.72; in the Second Year or Class B, 25 students presented themselves and
20 passed, a percentage of 80 : in the First Year or Class A, 37 students
presented themselves and 24 passed, a percentage of 64.86. Four students of
Class A, two of Class B and one of Class C although they obtained the required
aggregate of marks failed to qualify in one subject. These seven students
are eligible to appear for re-examination at the Supplementary Examination
to be held in April.

The results of the Supplementary and the Annual Examinations held in
1915-16 combined are as follows :—

In the Final Year or Class C 30 students presented themselves and 16
passed giving a percentage of 53.33; in the Second Year or Class B 26 students
presented themselves and 21 passed, a percentage of 80.77; in the First Year or
Class A 39 students presented themselves and 25 passed giving a percentage
of 64.10.

3.                                In January 1916, the commencement of the First Session, 58 candi-
dates presented themselves for admission to the College as against 60 last year.
The Principal admitted 34 students to Class A, 1 to Class B and 2 to Class C.
The remaining candidates were refused admission on account of educational
or physical unfitness or having failed to obtain scholarships did not join.
There were thus 37 new admissions this year as against 37 last year and 40 in
the preceding year.

4.                                There were 114 students' names on the College rolls in January 1916;
of these 37 were newly admitted students, 44 were students promoted to a
higher class, 32 were failed students and 1 was a student who had not appeared
for the examination. Of the failed students, 5 discontinued the course and
the name of the student who was not permitted to appear for examination was
removed from the rolls by the Principal. There were thus 108 students'
names on the rolls at the termination of the Official Year as against 94 at the
commencement.

5.                                Of the 37 new admissions, 28 students were natives of the Bombay
Presidency, 4 of the Central Provinces, 2 of Rájputána, 1 of Mysore State,
1 of Gwálior State and 1 of Indore State. Of the new students, 7 had passed
the School Final and 5 the Matriculation Examination. The remaining 25
passed the College entrance test or were otherwise eligible for admission. The
new students classified according to caste were 21 Bráhmins, 3 Maráthas,
3 Lingáyats, 1 Rajput, 6 other Hindus, 2 Mahomedans and 1 Pársi.

6.                                Of the 108 students on the College rolls at the end of the year, 92
were natives of the Bombay Presidency, a percentage of 85.19 as against 85.10
last year.
