ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE CIVIL VETERI-
    NARY DEPARTMENT, SIND, FOR THE YEAR 1919-20.

Mr. J. G. Cattell held charge of the office of the Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Sind, Baluchistan and Rajputana from 1st April to
19th July 1919 when he proceeded on combined leave and Mr. E. S. Farbrother
held charge from 20th July 1919 to the end of the year under report.

2.  Mr. Cattell was on tour in Sind for four days and travelled 216 miles by
rail and 16 miles by road. He inspected the Veterinary Dispensaries at Karachi
and Hyderabad and when possible he attended outbreks of epidemic disease.

3.  Mr. Farbrother was on tour in Sind for 97 days and travelled
3,223 miles by rail and 725 miles by road. He inspected all the Veterinary
Dispensaries except Sujawal and when possible attended outbreaks of epidemic
disease. He assisted on the Judging Committees of the Jacobabad Horse Show
and the Cattle Show held at Larkana. He visited the Agricultural Depart-
ment's Farm at Mirpurkhas and inspected sites for the proposed Veterinary
Dispensary at Sukkur. He attended, as a member, the meeting of the Board
of Agriculture held at Pusa in December and the Board of Examiners at the
Bombay Veterinary College. In this connection he was away from head
quarters for 28 days, travelled 2,598 miles by rail, 568 miles by sea and 12
miles by road.

4.  Khan Bahadur S. G. Haji held the post of the Deputy Superintendent,
Civil Veterinary Department, Sind, from 1st April 1919 to 8th January 1920
when he proceeded on six months' privilege leave. No substitute was
engaged. The Deputy Superintendent was on tour for 24 days and travelled
1,360 miles by rail and 260 miles by road. He inspected the Veterinary
Dispensaries at Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur and checked the Veterinary
Assistants' work and attended outbreaks of disease when possible.

                    I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION.

5.  There were six stipendiary students at the Bombay Veterinary
College at the beginning of the year and none were sent during the year. Two
scholarships were discontinued as the students failed in the Annual Professional
Examination held in November. There were thus four scholars studying at the
College at the close of the year.

                        II.—TREATMENT OF DISEASE.

6.  During the year outbreaks of contagious disease were reported from all
districts in the Province. The number of deaths reported was 1,688 against
4,125 in the previous year.

                                Equine Contagious disease.

7.  Glanders.—The disease was reported from the Karachi and Hyderabad
districts. Twenty-six cases (twenty-three from Karachi and three from Hyder-
abad) were detected and destroyed under the Glanders and Farcy Act as against
six cases reported from Karachi in the previous year.

8.  Strangles—Fifty-three animals were attacked and four died in the
Karachi, Hyderabad, Thar Parkar, Larkana and Upper Sind Frontier districts.

9.  Surra.— Seventy-two cases of surra among equines were reported
from the Karachi, Hyderabad, Thar Parkar, Nawabshah and Larkana districts.
Seventy-one animals died and one recovered under treatment. Last year 44
deaths were reported.

10.  Rabies.— Three animals were attacked by rabies in the Karachi
district and destroyed.

11.  Other contagious diseases.—Five animals died of other contagious
diseases in the Thar Parkar, Karachi and Nawabshah districts.

                            Bovine contagious disease.

12.  Rinderpest.—Four hundred and sixty animals were attacked by and
218 died of rinderpest in the Karachi, Hyderabad and Nawabshah districts, as
against 774 animals died in the previous year.
