This method of conferring protection against rinder-
pest has now been adopted as a routine all over the
Province and is being used as a prophylactic measure and
also in actual outbreaks.

With a view to help the Veterinary Inspectors in
diagnosing different diseases in the field and thereby
quickly diagnose different diseases instead of waiting for
the results from the Central Laboratory, microscopes and
other things necessary for laboratory work were supplied
to the Veterinary Inspectors, Hoshangabad, Akola,
Yeotmal, Saugor and Gondia.

12. Distribution of sera and vaccines.—109,100
doses of anti-rinderpest serum, 60,920 doses of hæmorrha-
gic septicæmia serum, 9,820 doses of blackquarter serum,
13,520 doses of anthrax serum, 184,150 doses of hæmorr-
hagic septicæmia vaccine, 50,300 doses of blackquarter
vaccine and 795 doses of tuberculin concentrated, 3 doses
of tuberculin ordinary, 1 dose of avian tuberculin, 39 doses
of mallein and 150 doses of fowl cholera serum were dis-
tributed all over the Province. There will be a consider-
able fall in the demand of anti-rinderpest serum in the
near future as goat virus vaccination work has been ex-
tended on an extensive scale in all the parts of the
Province.

13. Rinderpest.— During the year 1,765 [1,903] out-
break reports were recorded and the mortality was 8,608
[5,696]. This disease was prevalent more in the Chhat-
tisgarh division where 946 outbreaks were recorded.
Rinderpest received special attention during the year and
the protection of cattle by serum alone method was re-
placed by a cheaper and more effective immunization,
viz., goat virus vaccination. The work was started along
the main cattle routes in the Province and was gradually
extended in the interior. This process has created cer-
tain immunized zones all over the Province and it is
expected that the recrudescence of this epidemic will be
abated to a great extent in the near future. 492,730
goat virus vaccinations were performed during the year.
In addition to this 47,519 [129,858] animals were pro-
tected by serum-simultaneous method. Apart from this
the goat virus staff employed in this Province by the
Imperial Council of Agricultural Research visited 806
[391] villages and protected 141,177 [117,115] heads of
cattle in the different parts of the Province.
