one retired, the services of one were lent to the Imperial Veterinary
Research Institute and two were on deputation. The cadre at the
close of the year was 145 [149]. Three Veterinary Assistant
Surgeons were recruited during the year of whom one was a resident
of the Province and two were outsiders. The number of Agricul-
tural Assistants was the same as last year, viz., seven.

            I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION

12.   Mr. K. B. Pillay, Officiating Assistant Director of Veteri-
nary Services, was deputed for an advance course in animal
husbandry for eight months at Karnal and Izatnagar from the 15th
July, 1940 to 14th March 1941. Mr. Abdul Hamid Khan, Superin-
tendent, Government Cattle Breeding Farm, Telenkheri, was
deputed for 4 months for the poultry husbandry training at the
Imperial Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar.

13.   Compounders' training classes at the divisional head-
quarter dispensaries were held in abeyance during the year as a
good number of trained compounders are still available for em-
ployment.

            II.—TREATMENT OF DISEASES

14.  Diagnosis of diseases.—This item, as usual, formed
the chief activity of the laboratory and 7,190 [6,710] specimens
including blood smears, pus smears, milk, faeces, urine, nasal
washings, scrapings, worms, tumours, etc., were examined and
specific infection was detected in 752 [752] cases as follows :—
