ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE
                                   FOR THE YEAR 1917-18.

The appointments of Principal and Assistant Principal were held respectively
throughout the year by Mr. Aitchison and Mr. D'Silva and that of first lecturership
by M.R.Ry. V. Krishnamurti Ayyar. M.R.Ry. M. Anant Narayan Rao, second
lecturer, was granted combined privilege and sick leave on medical certificate for
six months from 9th October 1917. Veterinary Inspector T. P. Swaminatha Ayyar
was appointed to act in the vacancy and he joined duty on the 29th October 1917.
M.R.Ry. A. Ramachandra Ayyar was not confirmed in the appointment of third
lecturer and was transferred to the Civil Veterinary Department on 4th April 1917.
He was succeeded by Veterinary Inspector C. Venkataratnam Chetti on 7th May
1917 on probation for a year.

2. Selection of candidates.—The selection of candidates for admission into the
college for the year 1917 was held at Bezwada on 22nd December J 916 and at Madras
on the 3rd January 1917. Eighty-four men were provisionally selected, 32 of them
being Telugu6, 3 Uriyas and 49 Tamils and others. From this selection the class of 40
stipendiary students was formed composed of 21 Telugus and 19 Tamils and others.
In addition to them there were four men who had failed in the first professional exam-
ination, one specially deputed Deputy Ranger, one Parlākimedi State student and nine
non-stipendiary men who were allowed to remain at their own request to fill up
vacancies that might arise. Class A therefore had 65 men on the roll at the end of
March 1917.

During the second term, two Telugu students were allowed to resign, one on
medical certificate and one on private reasons and on refunding the amount he had
drawn as stipend, two non-stipendiary men left of their own accord and another
student was absent on sick leave.

The selection of Telugu candidates for admission to class A for the year 1918
was made by the Principal on 18th December 1917 at Bezwada and that of other
candidates at Madras on 21st January 1918. Out of 41 Telugus directed to appear
at Bezwada, 29 presented themselves, of whom 25 men were selected, 19 of which
joined the class on 21st January 1918.

Ninety-two candidates were instructed to appear for the personal selection at
Madras. Fifty-three only were present of whom 37 were selected and joined class.
