27. The total number of outbreaks in which inoculation was carried out was 201,
in which 1,912 animals died before inoculation, 20,394 animals were inoculated, of
which 34 animals subsequently died. In the previous year inoculation was under-
taken in 698 outbreaks in which 9,814 animals died before inoculation and 45,704
animals were inoculated of which 369 animals died subsequently.

                        ITINERANT ASSISTANTS' WORK.

29. Table IV shows the work of the Veterinary Assistants in the mofussil during
the year. The Assistants were 39 in number, they visited 6,639 villages, castrated
210 animals and treated 12,966 animals for contagious diseases and 40,980 animals
for non contagious diseases. In the previous year 6,685 villages were visited,
173 animals were castrated and 10,562 and 39,156 animals, respectively, were treated
for contagious and non-contagious diseases.

            VETERINARY HOSPITALS AND DISPENSARIES.

29.  Table V shows the working of the three hospitals. The total number of
animals treated as both in and out-patients was 3,319. In the previous year the total
was 3,391.

30.   Gauhati Veterinary Hospital.—The total number of animals treated during
the year as both in and out-patients was 1,195, of which 138 equines, 713 bovines
and 344 others. In the previous year the total was 1,041.

Twenty-six bullocks were sent to the hospital under the Cruelty to Animals Act
for treatment.

A sum of Rs. 382-2-6 was credited to the treasury as hospital fees against
Rs. 361-8-0 in the previous year.

31.  Silchar Veterinary Hospital.—Ninety-seven equines, 478 bovines and 147
others were treated during the year as in and out-patients making a total of 722
against a total of 1,167 in the previous year. The decrease was due to the absence of
the Veterinary Assistant on privilege leave for 3 months during which period no
substitute was available.

Five bovines were sent to the hospital under the Cruelty to Animals Act for treat-
ment.

A sum of Rs. 276-12-0 was deposited into the treasury as hospital fees against
Rs. 270-12-0 in the previous year.

32.  Shillong Veterinary Hospital.—During the year 253 equines, 580 bovines and
569 other animals were treated in the hospital as in and out-patients, making a total
of 1,402. In the previous year the total was 1,183.

One equine and 15 bullocks were sent to the hospital under the Cruelty to
Animals Act for treatment.

A sum of Rs. 503-8-0 was credited to the treasury as hospital fees against
Rs. 448-4-0 in the previous year.

                     PART III.—BREEDING OPERATIONS.

33.  Table VIII shows the number of stud-bulls in the province. At the begin-
ning of the year there were 9 bulls, and 12 bulls were reported at the close of the
year.

Three bulls were purchased during the year for the Government Farm at Shillong
and one bull by the Local Board, Mangaldai. One bull which was at Sibsagar in the
previous year was disposed of as it was found useless.

34.  Table IX shows the working of the Provincial Cattle Farm during the year-
The total number of animals as reported by the Farm Manager was 110 against 103
in the previous year. During the year 4 bulls and 2 bullocks were purchased. One
cow and 3 heifers died and 21 were sold. The total number of births was 23 compared
with 26 in the previous year.

                                     FAIRS AND SHOWS.

35.  Table XIV shows the number of cattle fairs and shows during the year.
There was a general decrease in the number of fairs and number of stock present. The
fair at Cachar was not properly held owing to the cholera epidemic, The Shillong
Agricultural show was not held during the year.
