and caused 3,271 deaths. In the previous year 1,886 deaths were reported from the
same number of districts. Goalpara and Darrang report the heaviest loss This
disease has usually a low mortality. It has been found that many of the cases die
from complications due to non-treatment and neglect.

21.  Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—This disease was reported from ten districts and
caused 3,713 deaths. In the previous year 1,926 deaths were reported from eight dis-
tricts. Diagnosis was confirmed microscopically in the districts of Cachar., Sylhet,

                                PREVENTIVE INOCULATION.

26.   Table III shows the result of preventive inoculation in the province. Daring
the year inoculation was undertaken in 285 outbreaks of Rinderpest in 19 subdivisions.
In these outbreaks 5,461 animals died before inoculation. Twenty-one thousand nine
hundred and forty-five bovines were inoculated. There were 256 deaths reported
amongst the inoculated animals. In the previous year inoculation was undertaken in
125 outbreaks in 15 subdivisions ; in these outbreaks 1,283 animals died before in-
oculation and 10,714 bovines and 103 others were inoculated of which 16 bovines died
subsequently.

There was an increase of 11,128 in the number of inoculations over that of the
previous year.

Serious outbreaks of rinderpest occurred towards the latter part of the year
affecting three subdivisions of Sylhet district. This district is alone responsible for
12,889 inoculations, i e, more than half of the inoculations done during the year.

The largest number of inoculations was made in Sylhet, Patharkandi, Habiganj,
Karimganj and Srimangal.

Cattle poisoning appears to be common in the province. Those who are respon-
sible for this malpractice often take the advantage of an outbreak to carry on their
business seemingly with the design to destroy the advantage and prestige of serum in-
oculation. The monthly return showing the existence of rinderpest and other con-
tagious diseases was regularly submitted to the Italian Consul General; Calcutta.
