       He examined 116 blood smears during the year of which twenty-four
            proved Anthrax, thirteen Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia and forty-two Surra
            which were subsequently confirmed by the Superintendent.

       (3) Babu Guru Prasanna Sen was in charge of the Gauhati Circle from 7th
            April to 20th May and 1st January to 29th February. He was out on
            tour for 20 days and travelled 177 miles by road and 323 miles by rail
            and visited 23 villages in connection with the result of inoculation and
            investigation of cattle diseases. He was on privilege leave for two
            months from 1st March 1920.

       (4) Babu Bhudhar Chandra Chatterjee, staff Veterinary Assistant was appointed
            officiating Veterinary Inspector, Gauhati Circle, during the appoint-
            ment of Babu Guru Prasanna Sen as officiating Superintendent. He
            remained in charge of the circle for 216 days (from 1st to 6th April, 21st
            May to 9th December and 25th to 31st December 1919). He was on
            tour for 81 days and travelled 1,316 miles by rail, 342 miles by steamer
            and 868 miles by road and visited 37 villages. He inspected the work
            of the Veterinary Assistants at Gauhati, Shillong, Nowgong, Nalbari,
            Barpeta, Bilashipara, Dhubri, Pathsala and Abhayapuri once each and
            Goalpara twice. He was also deputed to Sadiya to investigate a Surra
            case. He investigated suspected Surra and Glanders cases at Gauhati
            and Shillong, respectively. He failed to carry out the requisite number of
            inspections. He was on privilege leave for 15 days from 10th December
            1919. He was again on leave without pay from 14th January to the end
            of the year.

       (5) Babu Hem Chandra Sen was a staff Veterinary Assistant during the year.
            He was on tour for 22 days and visited 15 villages. His duties amongst
            others were receiving, despatching and keeping accounts of Sera etc.,
            assisting in the Laboratory and attending the in and out-patients in
            Gauhati Hospital.

       He was in charge of the office of the Veterinary Inspector, Gauhati Circle,
            from 10th December to 24th December 1919 and again from 1st March to
            the end of the year when the Veterinary Inspector was on privilege leave.

       He inspected the work of the following Assistants as an Inspector : —Nowgong
            and Barpeta twice, Dhubri, Bilashipara, Goalpara, Nalbari and Pathsala
            once each. He travelled 786 miles by rail, 115 miles by steamer and
            286 miles by road. He visited 27 villages in order to check the work of
            the Veterinary Assistants. In the month of January 1920 he attended
            the Surma Valley Light Horse camp at Silchar, where a Camp Veteri-
            nary Hospital was opened.

       (6) The number of Reserve Veterinary Assistants was six. Besides having
            been employed in leave vacancies in districts, Reserve Veterinary Assist-
            ants had also to be deputed to the headquarters station and interior of
            the following districts to supplement the work of the local staff :—Khasi
            and Jaintia Hills, Garo Hills, Goalpara, Nowgong, Dhubri, Kamrup,
            Haflong, Maulvibazar and Karimganj.

39.  The names of the following Assistants are noted for good work : —

Babu Hem Chandra Sen, Staff Veterinary Assistant, Babu Surendra Mohan Sen
Gupta, Veterinary Assistant, Jorhat.

            And in a lesser degree—

Srijut Madhab Chandra Das, Barpeta, Babu Narendra Nath Datta, Sylhet,
Babu Satish Chandra Das Gupta for good work both in the Military and Civil
Departments, Babu Satyendra Nath Das, Behali, Babu Devendra Nath Chaterjee,
Patharkandi, and Maulvi Dewan Faizuddin Ahmed, Gauhati.

                  PART V.—EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

40.  Table XIV (a) shows the total expenditure of the Department as furnished by
the Comptroller, Assam. The expenditure of the Department in the previous year
was Rs. 78,567-3-2.
