                                                     BOVINES.

      19.  Rinderpest.—During the year 20,003 deaths Were reported from 12 districts.
In the previous year 16,212 deaths were reported from 10 districts. This disease was
prevalent in a virulent form in the Surma Valley throughout the whole year.

      20.  Foot-and-mouth disease.—There were 5,433 deaths reported from 8 districts
against 3,271 deaths from 10 districts in the previous year.

      21.  Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—During the year 3,132 deaths were reported
from 9 districts In the previous year 3,713 deaths were reported from 10 districts.
Diagcosis was confirmed microscopically in the districts of Sylhet, Cachar, Goalpara,
Kamrup, Darrang, Nowgong and Sibsagar.

      22.  Black quarter.—During the year 278 deaths were reported from 6 districts
against 260 deaths from the same number of districts in the previous year. This
disease was confirmed microscopically in the districts of Naga Hills and Khasi and
Jaintia Hills. Specimens of Black quarter were received from Cachar and
Sibsagar, hut no confirmation was made on micro copic examination. No report of
other cases was received.

      23.  Anthrax.—There were 1,880 deaths reported from 9 districts. This disease was
confirmed in the districts of Cachar, Sylhet, Goalpara, Kamrup, Nowgong, Darrang,
Sibsagar and 'Lakhimpur. In the previous year this disease was reported from 8
districts and caused 1,299 deaths.

      24.  Other contagious diseases.—Ten thousand eight hundred and thirty-five deaths
were reported to have occurred during the year from 10 districts against 10,131
deaths from the same number of districts in the previous year.

                                                      OTHERS.

      25.  Contagious diseases amongst other animals.—There were 4,982 deaths
reported from 10 districts againts 3,960 deaths from the same number of districts in
the previous year. No further details are available.

                                        PREVENTIVE INOCULATION.

      26.  Table III shows the result of preventive inoculation in the province.

      27.  During the year inoculation was performed in 481 outbreaks of Rinderpest
in 18 subdivisions. In these outbreaks 9,552 animals died before inoculation. Forty-
three thousand five hundred and eleven animals were inoculate 1. There were 439
deaths reported amongst the inoculated animals. In the previous year inoculation
was performed in 285 outbreaks in 19 subdivisions, where 5,461 animals died before
inoculation, 21,945 were inoculated of which 256 reported to have died subsequently.
There was thus an increase of 21,566 in the number of inoculations over that of the
previous year. A serious and extensive outbreak of Rinderpest occurred in the Surma
Valley. The districts of Cachar and Sylhet alone are responsible for 33,464
inoculations.

The largest number of inoculations was made during the year in Silchar, Sylhet,
Srimangal, Patharkanli, Mariani and Badlipar. In the previous year Sylhet,
Patharkandi, Habiganj, Karimganj and Srimangal showed the largest number.

The monthly return showing the existence of Rinderpest and other contagious
diseases was regularly submitted to the Italian Consul General, Calcutta.

      28.  Anthrax.—During the year 97 specimens of suspected Anthrax were received
in the Laboratory of which 61 proved Anthiax. Inoculation was undertaken in 51
outbreaks. In these outbreaks 19 equines, 202 bovine3 and 3 others died before
inoculation. One hundred and eighty-three equines, 3,063 bovines and 8 others
were inoculated of which 1 equine and 3 bovines are reported to have died subsequent-
ly. In the previous year inoculation was undertaken in 69 outbreaks in which 27
equines, 399 bovines and 24 others died before inoculation. Two hundred and ninety-
three equines, 6,084 bovines and 148 othes were inoculated of which 15 bovines
were reported to have died subsequently.

Monthly return of Anthrax outbreaks has been submitted to the American
Consul General, Calcutta, during the year.

      29.  Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—The diagnosis of this disease was confirmed
microscopically in 32 cases. Inoculation was performed in 28 outbreaks, in which
191 bovines died before inoculation and 4 equines and 2,068 bovines were inoculat-
