8.  There was one Local Board stipendiary reading in the 3rd year class of the
College. He passed the Diploma examination.

9.  There was no private student from Assam attending the College during the
year.

10.  In the previous year six - students graduated from the College of which 5
joined the Department. But one subsequently resigned. Five Veterinary Assistants
were deputed to the Bengal Veterinary College during the year for a 2 months'
refresher course.

                    PART II.—TREATMENT OF DISEASES.

11.  Table II shows the approximate number of deaths from contagious diseases
reported during the year from eleven districts. The report from Lakhimpur district
has not been received.

12.  The total mortality reported from contagious diseases as compared with the
previous two years is as follows:—

The figures are supplied by the District Officers and checked by the Veterinary
Assistants as far as possible.

                                             EQUINES.

13.   Glanders.—Five cases of Glanders were reported from two districts during
the year as against one in the previous year. Compensations were given in four cases,
one case was destroyed by the owner and no compensation was given.

14.  Anthrax.—Fifteen deaths were reported from 4 districts during the year
against 21 deaths from 6 districts in the previous year. The diagnosis was confirmed
in all the districts.

15.  Surra.—Eighty deaths were reported from 7 districts during the year against
30 deaths from 4 districts in the previous year. Diagnosis was confirmed by microsco-
pical examination in all the districts. A heavy outbreak of Surra occurred in the
South Sylhet and Habiganj subdivisions of Sylhet district.

16.  Dourine and Epizootic Lymphangitis.—No evidence of these diseases was
found during the year.

17.    Other contagious diseases.—The number of deaths from other contagious
diseases was 259 against 488 in the previous year, but no details are available.

                                             BOVINES.

18.  Rinderpest.—Nine thousand eight hundred and fifty-five deaths were reported
from 9 districts during the year against 20,003 deaths from 12 districts in the previous
year. This disease was not prevalent in a virulent form during the year.

19.  Foot-and-mouth disease.—Four thousand four hundred and twenty one deaths
were reported from 8 districts during the year against 5,433 deaths from the same
number of districts in the previous year.

20.  Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—Two thousand two hundred and seventy-four
deaths were reported from 8 districts during the year against 3,132 deaths from 9
districts in the previous year. Diagnosis was confirmed microscopically in five
districts.

21.  Black quarter.—One hundred and seventy nine deaths were reported from
4 districts during the year against 278 deaths from 6 districts in the previous year.
Diagnosis was confirmed microscopically in the districts of Cachar and Naga Hills.
