REPORT OF THE VETERINARY ADMINISTRATION OF THE MANIPUR STATE
FOR THE YEAR 1924-25.
1. Personnel.—Babu Krisna Narain, Veterinary Assistant, held charge of the Department through-
out the year.
During the year under report a Second Veterinary Assistant M. M. Rosen Ali was appointed. So
at the end of the year there were two Veterinary Assistants as against one in the previous year.
2. Tours.—Babu Krisna Narain was on tour for 97 days travelling 1,142 miles. M. M. Rosen Ali
was on tour for 69 days travelling 60S miles. The Compounder Rajdhon Singh was on tour for
10 days and travelled 250 miles. They respectively visited 191, 27 and 9 villages as against 280
villages in the previous year.
8. Contagions diseases.—Death of animal from contagious disease, during the year is as
follows :—
Equines.—(a) One death from Anthrax was reported as against 6 in the previous year.
(b) Surra was reported from 11 places as against 12 in the previous year. The total number of
ponies attacked was 36 as against 82 of the previous year. Most of them were destroyed, the rest
dying in the natural course of the disease.
Bovines.— (a) Foot-and-mouth disease was reported from 33 places, mostly in Imphal, as against
9 in the previous year. Prompt action prevented the spread of the disease and no deaths were
reported.
(b) There were two deaths from Anthrax as against one in the previous year. Prompt precau-
tionary measures stopped the spread of the disease.
(c) There was one death under the heading " Other Contagious diseases " due to Rabies.
Other animals.—(a) During the year under report Rabies was responsible for 15 deaths amongst
dogs and jackals, as against 13 in the previous year.
(b) One elephant calf belonging to His Highness the Maharaja died of Anthrax. Other
elephants that came in contact were promptly inoculated. This prevented any further outbreak of this
disease among His Highness's elephants.
(c) There was one death from Pasteurellosis amongst home ducks. Necessary precautions against
the spread of the disease were adopted.
4. Preventive inoculation.-—It was undertaken in 4 outbreaks of Anthrax, 30 animals were
inoculated. No animal died after inoculation.
During the year 2,250 c. c. of Anthrax serum were used. The stock held at the end of the year
was 5,000 c. c. The year was again free from Rinderpest ; so the 3,000 c. c. of Anti-Rinderpest serum
held in stock from the previous year were not used.
5. In-patients.—Twenty-three in-patients were treated as against 19 in the previous year.
6. Out-patients.—The number of out-patients was 2,616 as against 1,718 in the previous year.
The increase in the number is due to the prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease in Imphal.
7. Operations.—One hundred major and 171 minor operations were performed during the
year as against 80 major and 203 minor in the previous year.
8. The reporting of cattle diseases by the village chaukidars somewhat improved during the
year.
9. Babu Krisna Narain, Veterinary Assistant, worked satisfactorily during the year. He reports
that Compounder Pajdhon Singh gave him satisfaction.
