                            CIVIL VETERINARY DEPARTMENT, ASSAM,

                                                        1925-26.

                         PREFACE—GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.

I held charge of the Office of the Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department,
Assam, throughout the year.

2. I was on tour for 148 days and travelled 4,270 miles by rail, 750 miles by
steamer and 906 miles by road and boat.

3.  The following hospitals and dispensaries were inspected by me during the year
under report :—

Veterinary hospitals at Shillong thrice and Silchar once, Veterinary dispensaries
at Mariani twice, Silchar, Hailakandi, Palonghat, Sylhet, Kulaura, Tezpur, Sibsagar,
Jorhat, Nazira, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh once each. During these inspections the
practical work of the Veterinary Assistants was carefully observed and instruction
and advice given. The work of the Veterinary Inspectors of Gauhati, Silchar and
Dibrugarh, Staff and Reserve Veterinary Assistants was also inspected by me.

4.  I attended the meeting of the Board of Agriculture in India held at Pusa in
December 1925.

5.  In the Laboratory at Gauhati 603 specimens of various kinds were examined
microscopically of which 52 were diagnosed as Anthrax, 54 as Hæmorrhagic Septicæ-
mia and 31 as Surra. The rest were examined for other blood, skin and intestinal
parasites, etc. In the previous year 528 specimens were examined of which 55 proved
Anthrax, 12 Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia and 13 Surra.

                        PART I.—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION.

6. During the year under report there were five Government stipendiaries of this
province at the Bengal Veterinary College. They were distributed as follows :—
