amounted to Us. 10,656 which has since been paid.

68. Number of patients treated.—The total number of fresh
in and out patients treated at the hospitals during the year
under report was 63,286, as compared with 56,525 treated in
1928-29. There has been an increase of 6,761 patients over those
of the previous year. Out of the total number, 31,925 were
treated in 14 hospitals in the North Bihar, 17,496 in 11 hospitals
in the Central and 13,865 in 8 hospitals in the Orissa range.
In addition, 10,849 cases not brought to hospitals were supplied
with medicines and 7,553 castrations were performed by the
hospital assistants in three ranges, against 10,851 cases and
2,869 castrations in the year 1928-29. The increase in the num-
ber of castrations under this head is also noticeable.

The details are shown in table V.

                                        CHAPTER IV.

                            BREEDING OPERATIONS.

69.   Control of Livestock improvement.—According to the
decision arrived at by Government the Civil Veterinary Depart-
ment exercised control over the Patna Cattle Breeding and
Dairy Farm and looked after the breeding bulls maintained at
different veterinary hospitals as before.

70.  Buffalo Breeding.—As arranged previously, the staff
gave professional advice to the Agriculture Department in
respect of 31 buffalo bulls made over by that Department. Of
these, 25 bulls were distributed in selected areas of Muzaffarpur
and Darbhanga districts.

71.  Stud bulls.—On the 1st April 1929, there were 62 bulls
including four Government bulls at the different veterinary
hospitals and dispensaries against 58 on the same date of the
preceding year. Forty-four fresh bulls being obtained, the total
number was 106. Out of these, there were 41 casualties leaving
65 bulls at the end of the year under report. The number
includes the buffalo bulls of the Agriculture Department, while
that shown as casualties, includes the bulls that were either
distributed, died or made over to goshalas. Details are given in
the table.

72. Castration of scrub bulls.—This work was carried on by
the staff even more vigorously as will appear from the fact that
the total number reached 71,927 as compared with 33,607
