visited Sitamarhi fair. Due to scarcity and pollution of water,
gastric troubles broke out. at Bhairoasthan fair both among men
and animals. At the Bihta Rural and Agricultural Exhibition
which was held this year on a larger scale, a veterinary
section was organised by the Department. The exhibits of this
section among other items of interest included bulls, bull
calves, cows and heifers taken from the Patna cattle-breeding
farm and also samples of fodder grown at the farm. His
Excelleucy the Governor and Lady Stephenson paid a visit to it.

The health of the animals brought to the fairs was, on the
whole, satisfactory.

1,105 animals were booked to different places from the
Sonepur district of the Bengal and North-Western Railway.

The particulars of the fairs and shows are shown in tables
XIII and XIV.

                                        CHAPTER V.

                    PROVINCIAL ESTABLISHMENT.

86. There was no change in the personnel of the permanent
cadre of the department the same three officers having continued to
work throughout the year. Eai Sahib P. N. Das was however
due to retire in May last but has been granted one year's
extension. The sanction for the post of Special Officer, North
Bihar Range, was continued for another year from 1st December
1929. Particulars of the officers recruited on contract for the
Bihar and Orissa Veterinary College have been noted in para-
graph 18 of the report. The three Professors as well as the two
lecturers hold gazetted rank.

                                    CHAPTER VI.

                SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

87.  The number of veterinary inspectors employed was 13
as in the previous year.

88.  As regards the two temporary inspectors appointed
under the Cruelty to Animals Act, the services of Babu
S. B. Sahay who was employed under the Patna City Muni-
cipality, were transferred to them according to the foreign
service rules for three years with effect from 1st April 1930.
The municipality have agreed to bear the entire cost, of the
officer including his leave and pension allowances. The term of
