on contract for five years of Mr. P. G. Malkani, B.V.SC.,
M.R.C.V.S., as Research Officer and Professor of Pathology and
Bacteriology.

82. The scheme for the introduction of the Bihar and Orissa
Veterinary Service, Class I, was further considered by Govern-
ment during the year.

                                 CHAPTER VI.

               SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

83. There was no change in the number of veterinary
inspectors which remained 13 as in the previous year.

84. Another senior veterinary assistant surgeon, Babu
M. S. Mohan Raj, was appointed Cruelty Inspector under the
Bihar and Orissa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals for one year from 9th October 1930 for North Bihar
areas, there being now 3 officers of this class including the one
transferred to foreign service under the Patna City Municipality.

The staff of three veterinary inspectors being insufficient
for the Orissa Range, one of the C posts of inspectors of the
Central Range was transferred to that range and a new circle
with Sambalpur as headquarters was opened during the year.
Inspector, Babu M. M. Banarji, who was attached to the Patna
Cattle Farm returned to his own circle, Hazaribagh.

85.  On 1st April 1930, the district cadre consisted of 126
veterinary assistant surgeons including the assistant surgeon
employed under the Bettiah Raj. During the year, 9 new
graduates were absorbed, and one assistant (hitherto employed
as Khedda officer) reverted, making the total number 136. Out
of these, 2 were promoted to the staff, 4 were transferred to the
Bihar and Orissa Veterinary College, 1 retired, 1 resigned and
1 died ; so that, at the end of the year, there were 127 veterinary
assistant surgeons actually employed in districts, i.e., 30
stationary and 97 touring.
