climatic and dietetic points of view and enquired into the
condition of retention of urine in the bullock which appears to
be very common in Shahabad district. The officer submitted
his usual quarterly and annual reports to the Imperial Council
of Agricultural Research through the local Government.

                              CHAPTER VIII.

                                 Expenditure.

124.  The total expenditure of the department including
the Veterinary College and the Cattle Farm amounted to
Rs. 6,81,825-3-0 as compared with Rs. 6,51,822-7-8 in 1932-33.
Out of this sum, Rs. 4,16,504-8-0 were spent from the Provincial
Revenues and Rs. 2,65,320-11-0 from the Local Fund budget
against Rs. 3,90,576-6-3 and Rs. 2,61,246-1-5 respectively, spent
from the same two sources in the previous year. The increase
under the head " Provincial " was due to restoration of 5 per cent
in the cut of salaries, periodical increments and inclusion of
expenditure on veterinary dispensaries in Angul.

Compared with the total Provincial Revenues, the expendi-
ture incurred by Government for the department was .78 per cent.
The total receipts of the department amounted to
Rs. 1,12,801-7-3* against Rs. 1,24,013 in the year 1932-33.

                              CHAPTER IX.

                  Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

125.  The inspector (Babu S. B. Sabai) appointed by the
Patna City municipality under the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act prosecuted 496 cases out of which 466 ended in
conviction (including a few cases of the previous year) as com-
pared with 499 cases prosecuted in 1932-33. A sum of Rs. 2,603
was realized as fines from the cases instituted in court. The
work was also carried out by the district veterinary assistant
surgeons as well as by the Bihar and Orissa Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

126.  During the year, the financial position of the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals improved considerably in
consequence of the Government decision to hand over the fines to
the Society. It also realized a sum of Rs. 1,200 from a Cinema show
organized by Mrs. Ansorge under the patronage of His Excellency
the Governor and Lady Sifton. It did not hold its annual show
but contributed a sum of Rs. 250 thus saved, to the Viceroy's
Earthquake Relief Fund, and further distributed another sum
of Rs. 500 to alleviate the suffering of earthquake-affected
animals at Muzaffarpur and Menghyr. The Society held several
meetings, and at one of them discussed the question of extending
