What is the total land area of the subdivision, (cultivated, grazing and
sterile, separately, if practicable) ?

The land area of the Subdivision is 861,410 acres, of which 530 000 acres
arc cultivated and the rest grazing and sterile.

Is any land available on a Government estate or otherwise, and if so,
on what estate which is suited for cattle-breeding ?

There is land available for cattle-breeding in the Khagra estate

How are cattle fed, whether stall-fed or grazed, or both ; and whether
any grain, &c., is allowed ?

Excepting cart-bullocks and pet cows of rich men, which are stall fed
the rest are only grazed, and no grain is given to them Grain and
paddy are sometimes given to the cart bullocks of rich men besides
oil-cake.

In some parts of the subdivision grazing is plentiful. In others it is
sufficient.

In dry seasons scarcity of drinking-water for cattle is felt in those
parts where there is no river, tanks being very few here. People feel
it a difficult task to draw water from wells for a large number of

There are about 2 to 3 bulls in 100, of all descriptions. It is not suffcient.

No, the cows are milked once a day. One-fourth of the milk the calves
generally get.

Between the 6th and the 9th month of their are. Grass and straw are

given to them after weaning as usual. No special food is given.
Generally at the age when two teeth come out, till four teeth become
visible, i.e. between the 3rd and 4th years of the age of calves.

Is fodder stored for cattle, and if so, what does it comprise? ......

Generally no fodder is stored. Paddy straw, which is the principal stored
fodder in some Bengal districts, is left here on the fields the ears
being only cut and gathered by the cultivators, and the cattle are lot
loose to graze on the fields with standing straw.

Average yield of milk, and how long after calving do the cows continue
to give milk ?

One-half to one seer; 6 months. The cows being also used in ploughs
they are generally very bad milkers.

Of bulls, Rs. 10 to Rs. 20; of cow Rs. 10 to Rs. 30 ; and of bullocks,

Bullocks only are imported, and their price varies from Rs. 60 to Rs. 80
per head.

Whence do the imported cattle come, and for what purpose are they
imported ?

From Bihar district, as Chapra (Saran), Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga &c.,
exclusively for driving carts. They are invariably gelded bullocks and
are sold in large numbers during the local fair.
