good stamp. The young cattle are most promising. Seven bulls will be
distributed from this farm in the coming year. A new herd book has been
brought into use. Fourteen cows and 25 young stock were rejected, and
realized Rs. 851.

Table IX and valuation statement show the results of the working of the
provincial cattle farms during the year.

Sin Catle.—A herd of Siri cattle comprising 28 heifers and 2 bulls
have been acquired for Government in Bhutan by Mr. Claude White, Political
Agent in Sikkim, and have been handed over to the Kalimpong Colonial
Homes to keep under certain conditions. The quality and shape of the
animals are not good except in the case of a few.

The Deputy Commissioner of Angul is to be congratulated on the
efforts he is making to improve the breed of cattle on the Government estate;
15 cows and 2 bulls were sent to him during the year, and it is hoped the
purchase of a further number will be sanctioned next year.

                           (2) Equiness (under Local Bodies).

20.     (i) Horse and Pony Stallions.—Tables X and XI show the service and
produce of the pony stallion maintained by the Hathwa Raj, and Table XII
shows the cost of food, keep and attendance, etc. Proposals are before
Government for the improvement of ponies in the Angul Government
estate.

                                               (3) Others.

21.    It is hoped that sheep and goats will be sent to Angul from Bihar
for the improvement of the local breeds.

                                       (4) Fairs and Shows.

22.    The following fairs and shows were held during the year, and were
inspected:—Kalimpong, Khagra, Siripur, Bihta, Sonepur, Barrapur, Sitamarhi,
Bagdogra, Suri, Chatra and Khulna; Chatra and Suri were not inspected
owing to the clashing of dates. The Ranchi fair and show were not held owing
to famine. The imperial grants towards shows held in connection with fairs
has been withdrawn, as it was found to be of little use in the encouragement
of cattle breeding. The Khagra show was not a success, but might be with an
energetic officer. The Rainagar fair was not held this year,

Tables XIII and XIV show the particulars regarding the above-named
fairs and shows,

                  IV.—SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

23.    Table VII shows the strength of the subordinate staff during the
year. Appointments have been found for all graduates who passed out
last year both in this and the new province, but District Boards are still
extremely slow to avail themselves of the services of Veterinary Assistants.
The work performed by the Veterinary Assistants has in general been satis-
factory. The Veterinary Assistant of Burdwan was dismissed by the District
Board for misappropriation of District Board funds. A criminal suit is now
pending against him. The work of the Darjeeling Veterinary Assistant is not
satisfactory. One Veterinary Assistant resigned his appointment, and is now
in private practice, and two Veterinary Assistants have obtained posts as
Inspectors to the Perak Government. The inspecting staff worked well during
the year.

                V.—EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

24.    Table XIVA shows in detail the expenditure of the Department
during the year.
