                                        Horse and Pony Stallions.

43.     As reported in the previous years, there was no horse or pony
stallion in the province. Tables X, XI and XII are therefore blank.

                            Part IV—Subordinate Establishment.

44.     Table VII shows the strength of the subordinate staff.

45.     There were at the close of the previous year 6 inspectors, 4 staff
Veterinary assistants. 6 Reserve Veterinary assistants and 69 District
Veterinary assistants. Thirteen Veterinary assistants were added to the
staff during the year, making the total number of District Veterinary
assistants to be 82. Two new posts of Veterinary assistants sanctioned
during the year and a number of leave vacancies among the existing staff
could not bo filled up for want of men. Several applications from District
Hoards for additional appointments had also to be postponed for the same
reason.

46.     The demand for Veterinary assistants continues to increase.

47.     Deputy Superintendent.—The post of one, 2ml grade Deputy
Superintendent was sanctioned this year and Babu S. (J. Paul was appointed
from the 10th duly 1915. His work has been satisfactory and has contrib-
uted largely to the efficient supervision of the Department.

48.     Inspectors.—Of the six inspectors of the Department, the post of
one was kept vacant since the appointment of the Deputy Superintendent to
meet the cost of employment of the latter, as there was no provision for the.
same in the budget estimates for the year. These officers rendered me all
the assistance required and gave satisfaction.

49.    Staff Veterinary Assistants—worked satisfactorily during the
year.

50.     Veterinary Assistants.—On the whole, the Veterinary assistants
worked satisfactorily during the year.

51.     The names of the following Veterinary assistants are reported to
have done particularly good work:—

„      J. N. Mukerjee, H.

„      M. N. Majumdar.

52. Table XIVA shows the details of the expenditure of this Depart-
ment as well as of the Bengal Veterinary (College.

                                            General Remarks.

58. Cruelty t0 Animals.—I can only repeat suggestions made in last
year's report, i.e., of making all dispensaries, with accommodation for
in-patients, hospitals under the Act. Animals to be detained there till cured
and fees realised as fines.

54.     Cattle-poisoning.—As usual many cases of cattle-poisoning have
occurred particularly from arsenic.

55.     Office Establishment.—The office staff have worked well, giving
me every assistance.

56.     Obituary.—Veterinary Assistant Babu S. N. Chatterjee of Kuri-
gram died during the year.
