The number of solitary cells in the dangerous ward was formerly insufficient.
Six new ones have been begun. This will prevent the necessity of using any
other form of physical restraint.

A work-shed in the criminal ward has been sanctioned, but has not been
begun to be built yet, as there were no funds available during the year.

Water-supply.

12. With reference to the Lieutenant-Governor's remarks regarding a
new water-supply, enquiries were made as to the possibility
of getting the municipal water. It was replied that it could
not be given from the Railway main, which was scarcely large enough for
the Railway. The Municipality had no intention of laying down a larger main,
even if it was asked for, as there were no funds. The cost of a separate main
from the Yakki gate would be Rs. 11,600. As a temporary measure, arrange-
ments will be made to get drinking and cooking water brought from the
municipal hydrant in a water cart, and distributed and stored in a cleanly
manner. Water for washing and cleaning purposes will be supplied, as before,
from the well in the asylum.

Establishment.

13. Dr. Gray held the office of Superintendent from the beginning of the
year till the 25th July, when I took over charge. The
Matron, Mrs. A. E. Sinnott, died on the 2nd October of
pneumonia, and Mrs. M. Mahon was appointed in her place on the 2nd November.
The Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Surgeon Abdul Hamid, and the Clerk
Javand Lál, have done their work satisfactorily. First class warder Shamshere
Khán is now old and sickly, and has been off work from sickness for prolonged
periods. He will be recommended for gratuity. A younger man who is physically
fit for the duties is required in his place.
