                                 Criminal Lunatics.

20.    The total number of criminal insanes confined in the asylums in the
year 1914 was 229 of whom 214 were males and 15 females as compared with
227 composed of 212 males and 15 females in 1913 and 211 composed of 197
males and 14 females in 1912. The average population for the triennium was
208 males and 15 females against 184 males and 15 females in 1909—1911.
The daily average strength was 170.3 against 189.0 in 1913 and 155.5 in 1912,
the mean strength for the three years being 171.6 against 157.2 for 1909—1911
an increase of 9 per cent.

               Previous occupation of the insanes admitted.

22.    Labourers gave the largest number of admissions during the triennium
under review, followed by merchants and traders, domestic servants, cultivators,
clerks, mendicants and artisans. The admissions of soldiers increased from
2 in 1912 to 6 in 1913 and 15 in 1914.
