I HAVE the honor to submit the report of the Madras Lunatic Asylum for the
year 1880-81.

Buildings.—During the past year an upper story has been added to the Super-
intendent's quarters, the roofs of all buildings have been repaired, the Duff's
cooking ranges have been refitted and in part renewed, and the eight single rooms in
the criminal enclosure have been repainted. The buildings are now generally in
good order, but the asphalte floors of some of the cottages require repair.

Population.—On 31st March 1880 there remained 179 males, 67 females, or
together 246 insanes.

During the year 122 patients have been admitted, 76 discharged, 23 died, and
2 escaped. The total number treated was 368, viz., Europeans 103, Natives 265.

The greatest number in the asylum on any one day was 271 ; the average
daily number was 260½. The number remaining on 31st March of this year was
267—males 195, females 72.
