14                  ANNUAL REPORT ON LUNATIC ASYLUMS.

            ANNUAL MEDICAL REPORT

                                        OF THE

             LUNATIC ASYLUM, MADRAS,

                        FOR THE YEAR 1881-82.

I HAVE the honor to submit the report on the Madras Lunatic Asylum for the year
1881-82.

                                I.—BUILDINGS.

The rooms have been asphalted. The ventilation of the three single rooms
has for safety's sake being altered, slits being substituted for oval openings.

There are no quarters for the Second-class European Attendants and for the
Assistant Matron. If they had quarters in the asylum they could do their work
more efficiently.

There is insufficient accommodation at the female bathing place ; most of the
Native women have to bathe in the open.

The male bathing place (for Europeans, East Indians, and Natives) should be
covered by a light shed and surrounded by a four-feet wall on account of decency
and the sun. A similar arrangement should be built at the female bathing place.

                                II.—FINANCIAL.
