This year the majority of the European soldiers were from the infantry
showing that the large proportion of artillery men, last year, was probably acci-
dental. Most of the men had become affected while in Burmah, or soon after
leaving that country. The climate of Burmah appears to have a very depressing
influence on the nervous system and mind.

The diseases of the European patients were as follows:—

(d.) Causes.—Medical certificates are not, as a rule, very trustworthy as
regards the causes assigned for insanity. Very little can be found out from the
previous history, especially in the case of natives.
