ANNUAL REPORT ON LUNATIC ASYLUMS.                      21

Transferred.—There were 5; 2 were transferred to the Lunatic Asylum,
Madras—one East Indian and one native female; and 3 handed over to their
relations.

Died.—Three. Of these 2 were admitted in a " very bad" state of health and
1 in a " fair" state: 2 died after seven months' residence in the asylum and 1
within forty days. The percentage of deaths to average strength was 3.08 ; and to
average admissions 8.57.

I am very glad to be able to note that the mortality during the year has never
been less since the asylum was opened, which fact alone speaks well for the care
and attention bestowed by the resident Medical Subordinate.

No deaths have occurred among the female and criminal lunatics.

Of the criminal lunatics the subjoined table will show the name, age, &c., of

The general health of the inmates has been excellent.

The maximum number treated in the asylum in any one day was 106 and the
daily average strength was 97.16. The total number treated during the year was
131, which is 23 more than the previous year. This is the highest figure on record
since the opening of the asylum of total treated, and of deaths 3 makes the lowest
figure on record, which is most satisfactory.

Of the 100 remaining at the close of the year, 74 were males and 26 females ;
of these 73 have gained in weight, 8 remain in statu quo, and 19 lost in weight. 1
may note here that the weight of each inmate is taken every month and registered
in a book kept for the purpose.
