6 STATISTICAL RETURNS OF THE LUNATIC ASYLUMS
provided with a laboratory or the assistance which is necessary for detailed clinical
investigation of each case. Good work however is being done and I am able to
report that during the past three years there has been a distinct attempt made to
pass from the state of the lunatic asylum to that of a hospital for patients suffering
from mental diseases. Much more remains to be done, but in the present condi-
tion of financial stringency there does not seem to be much prospect of advance
in the near future.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
T. H. SYMONS, LT.-COL., I.M.S.,
Offg. Surgeon-General with the Govt. of Madras.
For MAJOR-GENERAL G. G. GIFFARD, I.M.S.
