The total average cost per head in 1897 was Rs.88-11-1, against Rs.63-1-8
in 1896. The increase is due to compensation for dearness of grain paid to the
establishment and the dearness of food-grain purchased for the inmates of the
Asylum, and the contingent charges, viz., Rs.3,481-2-5, against Rs.2,371-15-0 in
1896 on account of the Dairy Farm.

                                   STATEMENT No. X

Requires no comment.

Except the ordinary annual repairs to the Asylum buildings nothing was
done by the Public Works Department, and no original works carried out.
Surgeon-Major G. F. A. Harris held charge throughout the year.

The Asylum was inspected by the Administrative Medical Officer on the
12th August, and the Inspector General of Jails on the 22nd April. The usual
monthly meetings were held and the half-yearly meetings for the examination
of the criminal lunatics were held on the 15th January and 15th July. The
Deputy Superintendent Hospital Assistant Abdul Majid Khan held office through-
out the year and worked with his usual zeal, both for the welfare of the
lunatics and to ensure the success of the Dairy scheme. I have said so much in
former reports on the conduct and qualification of this official, that nothing fur-
ther remains to be said, except that he has filled the difficult and responsible post of
Deputy Superintendent of the Nagpur Asylum for an almost unbroken period of
21 years to the complete satisfaction of all of his official superiors.

The Clerk and Compounder, S. M. Santio, performed the clerical duties satis-
factorily.

                                   G. F. A. HARRIS, M.R.C.P. (LOND.),

                                                               Surgeon-Major, I.M.S.,

                                                                      Superintendent, Lunatic Asylum.
