                                           STATEMENT VIII.

23.    This statement shows the sickness and mortality during the year.

There were 69 admissions into hospital and 11 deaths, against 205 and 17,
respectively, in 1898.

24.    The daily average number of sick was seven males and one female,
total eight, against 5.74 males and 0.99 females, total 6.73, in 1898.

The increase in the daily average number of sick, as compared with the
previous year, is due to the fact that several of the infirm and epileptic inmates
were kept in hospital during the greater part of the year, so that they might be
under more immediate observation and receive special care and treatment.

25.    The chief causes of admissions to hospital were debility 18; ague 10 ;
dysentery 6 and abscess 6.

26.    Local injuries, all of a trivial nature, accounted for 4 admissions. Three
of these (2 cases of scalp wounds and 1 case of wound of the finger) were caused
by the lunatics quarrelling amongst themselves, and one (a wound of the foot)
was caused by juari stubble whilst the patient was working on the farm.
