36                                            PATNA ASYLUM.

after his arrival his fitness for his important office became suspected by Dr. Hutchinson,
and his subsequent misconduct and necessary removal have already been fully reported.
He quarrelled with the whole of the native establishment, who entertained no respect for
him, and especially with the native doctor, who had up to that time been a useful and atten-
tive man, but eventually became so insubordinate and insolent, that he had to be suspended
and sent to a distant and inferior post as a punishment. The native doctor appointed in his
room appears to give satisfaction, as does the native overseer or darogah who was put
in subordinate charge of the asylum as a temporary measure until the arrival of a European
overseer transferred from Cuttack. I trust that things will work well and smoothly under
the superintendence of the latter, and it is proposed to place his wife in charge of the female
ward should she prove to be qualified for the post.
