amounting to 32.35 per cent. of the number treated, and the mortality had
diminished to 2.9 per cent. These results are very satisfactory, and evince
careful management on the part of the Superintendent and his subordinates.

21.    Moydapore.—Thirty-eight persons were under treatment during
the year, showing the increasing usefulness of this asylum and the necessity
of providing it with better quarters. The question of making over a portion
of the vacated barracks at Berhampore is still not decided, and a reference
will again be made to the Government of India on the subject. Nine cases
were cured or relieved, and the rate of mortality was 18.42 per cent., which
shows a considerable falling off, caused by cholera chiefly.

22.    In the Bhowanipore European Asylum, which is also under the
management of Dr. Payne, there were 52 admissions during the year, and
37 remained under treatment at its close, of whom 26 were males and 11
females.

23.    There has been a diminution in the number of military insane pati-
ents, owing to recent arrangements for shipping them to England from Bombay;
35 persons were despatched to Europe as ordinary invalids, and 13 as insane,
at a cost of Rs. 10,497; 20 were discharged as cured or improved, and the
mortality was not more than 1.9 per cent. The sum of Rs. 2,129 was
realized on account of paying patients, of whom six—all females—remained
under treatment.

24.    The cost of maintenance has been reduced from Rs. 23-5-4 to
Rs. 21 per head. The results generally are regarded as very satisfactory,
and the Lieutenant-Governor accords his thanks to Dr. Payne for his able
management.

25.    The acknowledgments of the Lieutenant-Governor are also due to
the Inspector-General and Deputy Inspector-General for their most careful
and vigilant administration.
