11. Occupations of those admitted.—Statement No. 6, which is a compilation of table
No. 6 rendered by each asylum, shows the occupation of those who were admitted into
asylums in 1871. Cultivators constitute the largest proportion of admissions, 15.7 per cent.;
next come coolies, 10 per cent.; beggars, 8 per cent.; domestics, 7.2; housewives (this term
embraces about 28 per cent. of female admissions), 5.7; shop-keepers, 5; prostitutes, 2.7; and
constables, 2.7. The occupation of 21.2 was unknown, and the only circumstance worthy of
note among the remainder is that priests and writers constitute each 2 per cent. of the
admissions. The only broad conclusion that can be drawn from this table is, that the great
majority of lunatics are drawn from the lowest and least educated classes.
